The latest BETA Business Barometer reveals a mixed outlook across the youth, student and educational travel sector. Members within the Language School and Education Provider segment report that the volume of travel to the UK in 2025 was lower than in 2024, while operators in other parts of the sector indicate performance was broadly flat or marginally up year-on-year.

Looking ahead to 2026, all segments other than Language Schools and Education Providers forecast growth in the volume of youth and student travel, reflecting underlying resilience and continued international demand for UK experiences.

Recent months have, however, been more challenging than expected. Members report customer numbers and turnover below forecasts, with sentiment weakening since September. Short-term business confidence has dipped for a third consecutive wave and now sits at levels last seen in late 2022, with medium and longer-term confidence also easing.

Half of respondents believe the current UK policy environment will negatively affect their business over the next 12 months. Rising student-related costs and employer cost pressures are cited as the most significant factors, with close to two-thirds of members expecting to increase prices as a result. Geopolitical uncertainty is also emerging as a growing barrier to profitable growth.

When asked what would most support businesses, members called for reduced barriers to entry and greater policy consistency to help restore competitiveness.

Despite these pressures, more members expect an upturn rather than a decline in the months ahead, underlining the sector’s determination to adapt and grow.

Emma English, Executive Director of BETA, said:

These results show a sector that is resilient but under real pressure. Demand for UK experiences remains strong, yet rising costs and policy barriers are making it harder for schools and young travellers to choose Britain. The message from members is clear – reduce friction, provide stability and keep the UK competitive, and this industry will grow.
